Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival

Visiting: Quito

At arrival, you’ll be met by your local guide. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner in town with your guide.

Day 2 : Trek Cotopaxi National Park

Visiting: Cotopaxi

After breakfast we leave for the Cotopaxi National Park (2 h drive). Hike on the high plateau at the foot of the volcano. Walk through grandiose landscapes of Andean “Páramo” with very beautiful views on all the surrounding peaks that reach 4800 and 4900 m (16,080 ft), such as the Sinchologua and the Rumiñahui. Visit to pre-Inca ruins. 4 to 5 hours walk. Camp at 3600 m (11,810 ft) at the foot of the splendid snow-covered cone of the Cotopaxi volcano.

Day 3 : Rumiñahui ascent (4722 m / 15,500 ft)

Visiting: Cotopaxi

We leave our camp, and climb the flanks of the volcano Rumiñahui, to reach its summits at 4722 m (15,492 ft). 6 to 7 hours walking. Back to our base camp.

Day 4 : Cotopaxi refuge & glacier (5000 m / 16,400 ft)

Visiting: Cotopaxi

After the breakfast, departure for the Cotopaxi refuge. Short transfer by vehicle on a dusty road that ends 200 m below the Cotopaxi refuge (4600 m / 15,092 ft). There is about 45 minutes walk on a sandy path to reach the refuge (200 m / 656 ft of slope). Excursion to the Cotopaxi glacier, back to the refuge and lunch. After lunch, back down to the camp by a beautiful path on the flanks of the volcano. Taking down of the tents and short transfer (1 h 15) to the small village of Insilivi located in the facing western cordillera and starting point of our next trek. Dinner and night in a small rural hostel.

Day 5 : Trek Insilivi-Chugchilan

Visiting: Western cordillera

Departure for a 3-day trek in the Western cordillera. This hike is an opportunity to dive into the middle of the Indian life and to traverse Andean landscapes of great beauty. It is a comfortable trek as two nights are spent in mountain inns on this up-and-down walk crossing hamlets and cultivated valleys such as the Rio Toachi. Stop for night in the village of Chugchilan.

Day 6 : Trek Chugchilan-Quilotoa

Visiting: Western cordillera

Continuation of the trek following notably an impressive canyon. On the way, crossing of villages and rivers. Arrive at one of the most beautiful sites in Ecuador: the lagoon of Quilotoa, a still active volcanic crater transformed by nature into a lake. Dinner and night in one of the small rural hotels or guesthouses managed by the Indians of the community.

Day 7 : Trek Quilotoa-Tigua

Visiting: Western cordillera

Final trekking day in the western cordillera. Hike between the lagoon of Quilotoa and the village of Tigua following the canyon of the Toachi river. At the end of the afternoon we set up in a small refitted family farm near the Indian village of Tigua.

Day 8 : Tigua > Quito

Visiting: Western cordillera - Quito

Depending on the day of the week, visit to the one of the Indian markets in the area before going back to Quito. (Tuesday: Latacunga / Wednesday: Pujili / Thursday: Saquisili / Saturday: Zumbahua / Sunday: Pujili). Lunch en route.

Day 9 : Departure

Visiting: Quito

Breakfast and transfer to the airport for your flight home.
