Overview

The Kichwa - Karanki indigenous community of Magdalena is located at approximately 9,842 feet above sea level at the slopes of the Imbabura Volcano with a most privileged location surrounded by valleys and lagoons, home to Atahualpa, the last of the Inca Emperors. It is immersed in this remarkably breathtaking pastoral setting that the Karanki keep the same harmonious relationship with their environment they've kept for centuries, tending to their livestock, cultivating their land and enjoying the clear mountain air. This sustainable tourism project is a joy for visitors and contributes to the livelihood of this local village.

This is a true home-stay with local Ecuadorian farmers. You will stay in a family's home to which simple, but comfortable rooms with private baths have been added. The family will cook you a traditional Ecuadorian meal. After dinner converse with the family by the fire! You'll have the chance for an authentic connection to local people.

During the day you can choose from a variety of activities including horseback riding, hiking and biking. You can also experience the local farming way of life, spending a few hours with the local farmers learning about crop planting and harvesting (local techniques, seasonal; potatoes, quinoa, lupin, corn, beans, wheat) or shepherding in the Andean Paramo.

The village is located above Otavalo, so we recommend combing a stay here with an overnight in Otavalo or a local Hacienda.

This itinerary is highly recommended for families or anyone interested in Ecuadorian and local Indian culture.

You can also volunteer at the community if you are interested in spending at least 5 days working. The pricing is reasonable, designed to cover transportation, lodging and food. On a volunteer stay you can do the following:

  • Seasonal planting and harvesting with the community: vegetables, medicinal plants and sell in the local market
  • Gastronomy interchange and team work
  • English lessons for kids at school or summer camp
  • Support with seasonal medical services
  • Contribute with the construction of pending projects in Magdalena community

Let us know if you are interested in volunteering and we will check on the latest details and costs.
