Day 2 : Glacier Walking Tour

Visiting: Solheimajokull Glacier

On this thrilling day tour, you'll experience a unique side of nature: the natural environment of an immense glacier! You will be guided through the labyrinth of a massive glacier tongue extending down from the fourth largest glacier in Iceland. Located only two hours from Reykjavík, we find the Eyjafjallajökull massif, and just a little further east the Sólheimajökull glacier, a tongue that extends down from its mother glacier, Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland’s fourth largest overall. Today, you will go on a safe, easy-paced, fully guided walk on crampons up onto the ice field where you will discover a wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges and deep crevasses, and learn about the glacier and the effect of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010 on the glacier and its surroundings. Your experienced mountain guides will teach you how to use the basic ice equipment necessary for this tour. On our return to the city, we'll make a stop at the photogenic waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss. Day 3 : Begin your Trek

Visiting: Iceland Outdoors

Today start your 5 day trek! Pick between one of these four amazing options:

* Option 1 (Most Popular): The Renowned Laugavegur Trek

This classic hut-to-hut trek travels Landmannalaugar to Porsmork, and is perhaps the best known of all treks in Iceland. The trail leads from the geothermal valley of Landmannalaugar in the southern highlands, south to Porsmork valley, at the foot of world famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano. The trail crosses the third largest geothermal region in the world, between yellow rhyolite mountains, over black sand deserts, beyond great canyons and into the verdant valley of Porsmork. The “Laugavegur” hike each year attracts hikers from around the world in addition of being a great favorite amongst Icelanders. Note that accommodation is in mountain huts. Note that this tour starts and ends at the central bus station in Reykjavík (BSÍ), with the meeting time is at 7:15 am. Pick up from hotel or guesthouse at the beginning of the tour can be added for an extra fee.

* Option 2: The Craters and Peaks of Laki / Iceland's Greatest Volcanic Region

The Laki craters and the surrounding lava field ranks as one of Iceland’s most striking locations, in fact it ranks as one of Iceland’s absolute best when it comes to trekking in the wilderness. The area has been volcanically active throughout the ages and has known several eruptions since the settlement of the country, the most famous being in 1783 along the Laki crater row when the most extensive lava field in the world resulting from a single eruption was formed. Although catastrophic at the time, the lava field and the area’s 135 craters form one of the most beautiful and surreal landscapes in Iceland. Imagine contrasting vast black sands with large moss-covered craters and lava in a true wilderness setting. In this wilderness just southwest of the famed Vatnajökull, the trail takes us amongst the sheer volcanic formations of the Eldhraun, and past rivers and lakes, a combination that gives this lunar landscape a magical aura. Note that this tour starts and ends at the central bus station in Reykjavík (BSÍ), with the meeting time is at 7:15 am. Pick up from hotel or guesthouse at the beginning of the tour can be added for an extra fee.

This is true adventure trek that takes you to the world famous Askja Caldera, a must visit for nature lovers and geology enthusiasts alike. Starting in the lush areas of Lake Myvatn we head into the vast desert highlands, covered by extensive lava fields and volcanoes. Until the early 20th century, this area was known and feared due to legends about outlaws that were said to rule this forbidding territory. Consequently very few people took their chances by venturing onto their turf, the smoke from active volcanoes believed to be smoke emanating from the outlaws’ farms. Today this area offers pristine wilderness at its best where many breathtaking moments await. A visit to the fertile oasis of on the way back to Lake Myvatn rounds out this fantastic tour in the north of Iceland. Note that this unique trek starts and ends in Lake Myvatn, which requires a round trip flight from Reykjavik, approx. $400 extra per person, round trip.

* Option 4: Oceans and Mountains – Trekking the Haunting Farmlands of the North Eastern Inlets

Hiking through the magnificent landscapes of the lovely mountains and sculpted bays of the North East is an exceptional experience. The mountains come in all shapes and sizes and the variety of colors is stunning; everything from the black sands of the beaches to the pinkish orange hues of the mountain ridges. The closeness to the ocean makes this option particularly unique from the others. Each day we follow old trails between isolated coves and fjords over colorful hills and down green valleys to the sea and the surging drone of the North Atlantic Ocean. This combination of mountains and ocean is what makes this trek a special one; another advantage is the milder climate that can be expected at this low altitude. The area remained populated until the early seventies and abandoned farms and ancient farmsteads dot the surroundings, though sheep may be the only living thing connecting us to those former times. Accommodations are in well equipped and comfortable huts. Note that this trek egins and ends at Egilsstaoir airport, meaning you’ll need to add an additional (approx.) $250 per person for round trip domestic flights from Reykjavík.
