Why Choose AWR for Kilimanjaro

You can do it!

Adventures Within Reach takes climbers up Mt. Kilimanjaro every day of the year. Safety is our highest priority! Climb Kilimanjaro on any of the routes.

AWR has helped these people reach the summit:

  • Guinness World Record holder for the oldest person to reach the summit at 84 years old
  • A woman who did the entire trek barefoot
  • A blind man from Iceland

Our local guides are licensed, trained, friendly, and with years of experience. Porters will also go on the trip to carry your luggage, food, and other equipment. You will only have to carry a day pack with your daily essentials. We use a high ratio of guides and porters to clients.

We use professional, quality mountain equipment and food is plentiful and delicious.

Groups are limited to 8 people (the typical group size is 4 people). We will combine groups up to this limit if they are starting the same route on the same day. However, we can also arrange for private groups at no extra cost. We will try to add single travelers to a group if at all possible but will also do groups with just one climber. We can also accommodate large groups of any size.

Safety on Kilimanjaro

AWR has select guides who are certified as Wilderness First Responders. All Kilimanjaro guides are trained in acute mountain sickness (AMS) and basic mountain first aid. However, they are not doctors or paramedics. Climbers are responsible for bringing their own first aid and medical supplies.

Kilimanjaro guides carry a cell phone for emergency use.

All climbers pay a rescue fee to the Kilimanjaro National Park (included in the price). If a client cannot walk because they are injured or sick, the national park will assist this climber down.

Safety Equipment:

  • Oximeters: are included on all treks at no charge (1 per group)
  • Oxygen: provided for $150
  • Hyperbaric bag: provided for $250

Kilimanjaro guides are trained and certified by the Kilimanjaro National Park. They start out as porters and work their way up to assistant guide. When they are ready (after about 2-4 years), they go through the national park certification process.

AWR also provides emergency evacuation service to its clients through the Flying Doctors' Society of Africa on selected itineraries. For other itineraries, AWR is happy to arrange for evacuation service for a nomnial fee.
