You’ll tour from bustling San Jose to the lush lowland rainforest on the coast, to the quiet beach town gateway of up-and-coming Marino Ballena, and onward to the misty cloud forests in the highlands. While you can start this tour any day during the green season, note that rains really begin to pick up sometime in September, and continue to gain strength into October and last through November. For travelers looking for dry conditions on a trip in Costa Rica in October or November, we might recommend a trip instead to the Caribbean side of the country. But whale and bird enthusiasts will not be disappointed by the amazing diversity we encounter on this amazing Costa Rica tour. DAY 1: Arrive Costa Rica

Arrive in San Jose International Airport anytime today. Here we meet you, and transfer you to San José’s city center, with the rest of the afternoon or evening at leisure to enjoy San Jose’s downtown or relax at of the hotel.

Overnight at San José, Presidente Hotel or similar, standard room

DAY 2: San José – Manuel Antonio

Breakfast at the hotel. This morning, transfer to beautiful Manuel Antonio, situated on the central Pacific coast. Free afternoon at leisure to the beach, enjoy an optional tour like horse riding or sea kayaking, take a surfing class, or simply relax and enjoy the facilities of the hotel.

DAY 3: Manuel Antonio

This morning, enjoy a ½ day guided wildlife tour by foot in Manuel Antonio National Park.

Manuel Antonio National Park is considered one of the most beautiful parks in Costa Rica. On this tour, you will visit pristine beaches, with coral reefs, bordered by exuberant vegetation and the natural wonders of the tropical rainforest. The beaches in Manuel Antonio are highly coveted as some of the best that Costa Rica has to offer.

On the way to Manuel Antonio National Park, you will travel along the coastline enjoying scenic views, including African palm plantations. You will also travel past small villages along the Pacific Coast until you reach the port of Quepos and the ultimately the National Park.

Since access to the park itself is closed to vehicles, you will hike to the preserve, crossing a creek. Once in the park, you can simply relax and enjoy the beach, sunbathe, or hike through the park’s trails, which will allow you to observe Manuel Antonio’s abundant flora and fauna. Several species of monkeys, iguanas, birds and possibly even the three-toed sloth can be seen. If you chose to hike the trail to Cathedral Point, do not forget your camera; the views of the park and the sea are simply spectacular!

DAY 4: Manuel Antonio – Dominical  

Breakfast at hotel. This morning, transfer to nearby Dominical.

About 27 miles (44 km) south of Quepos is the quaint beach town of Dominical. Along the coast, before arriving in this popular surf town, the cascading cliffs converge with the deep-blue ocean, producing a scenic landscape full of small coves for truly precious views. The laid-back beach town is surrounded by plantations, estuaries, mangroves and marshes. Birders beware, you may not want to leave! Enjoy the afternoon strolling the beach or relaxing at the hotel.

DAY 5: Dominical

This morning, enjoy a special Whales & Dolphins expedition. The Bahia Aventuras Combo Tour is the best option to see the most of the famous Marino Ballena National Park. The boat departs from Punta Uvita Beach and visits the famous Punta Uvita Whale’s Tail, Ballena Island, Tres Hermanas Islets and Ventana Sea Caves. During the tour, we’ll search for humpback whales and two different species of resident Dolphins. When granted the opportunity, you might see and hear the songs of the humpbacks and or observe the acrobatic displays of the dolphins, making this trip the best whale watching tour in Costa Rica. Other species that are seen occasionally during this period are Bryde’s whales, pilot whales, false killer whales and other marine life.

We also visit the coral and rock reefs to snorkel and observe the wonderful marine wildlife of the Ballena Marine Park. While cruising in the boat you can enjoy the scenic beauty of the coastline of Costa Ballena and observe the diversity of shore and pelagic birds nesting and roosting in the Islets of the park. During the trip, the captain will take you to the caverns of Ventanas Beach where you can observe wonderful rocky formations and amazing caverns that were carved by the ocean and tectonic movements during thousands of years.  After the trip out on the ocean, return to the hotel and enjoy the rest of afternoon at leisure.

DAY 6: Dominical – Savegre

This morning, transfer to Santa Maria de Dota in the mountains. Here. enjoy a cup of coffee and relax in this small, authentic Costa Rican village. With the Talamancas range off in the distance and the pristine Pirris River flowing through town, nature enthusiasts are sure to be delighted. On top of an array of natural history excursions, the region is home to lush hills shrouded in coffee farms, which yield beans that possess a unique flavor due to the cooler climate. Check in at the hotel with the rest of your afternoon at leisure to enjoy the facilities of the hotel or go for a leisure wander and discover the amazing bird life and more in the area.

DAY 7: Savegre  

Following breakfast, enjoy a guided expedition by foot around San Gerardo de Dota to see the elusive resplendent quetzal, one of the world’s most beautiful birds. You’ll pause with your guide to enjoy the other wildlife you may see as well, ranging from colorful frogs to lustrous hummingbirds to gorgeous butterflies and more. In this area, the extraordinary success rate of seeing a quetzal is almost 90% anytime of year, primarily due to its unique wet montane habitat that’s almost perfectly suited to the quetzal. Enjoy the expertise of your naturalist guide, who not only points out wildlife but will also highlight many of the abundant plant varieties you’ll encounter along the way.

DAY 8: Santa Maria de Dota – San José

Breakfast at hotel.  This morning, transfer to San Jose International Airport, about 3 hours away. Please plan your departure from 1:30 pm or later, otherwise, plan to overnight in San Jose and depart the next day. (B)
