While  searching, Bingham came across the amazing find of Machu Picchu, now the  most visited site in Peru. \u00a0He went on to find the &#8220;last city&#8221; of the  Incas at Vilcabamba, deep in the jungle beyond Machu Picchu. \u00a0In these  searches, it was hoped that large stores of gold and silver would be  found. \u00a0In fact, very little of the precious ores was found; rather the  numerous artifacts were mainly skulls and bones, pottery, and tools.<\/p>\n<p>Peru  will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of Bingham&#8217;s &#8220;discovery&#8221; all  year, but the big event will be on July  7th, the date that Machu Picchu  was named as one of the New Seven  Wonders of the World (in 2007).\u00a0  Other grand celebrations will occur on and around July 24, the actual  anniversary of the &#8220;discovery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Special Anniversary Trip<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?llr=j4ntqqcab&amp;et=1104997023391&amp;s=0&amp;e=001FfXgX21640EhrMOy5G2G5yn8WqCbNqoXDNHii3si1u98NrHSnKqDb57-Zhch3j_nqGTO_Xgmbt2J73_TN_uePMV1-2Df4dNsqdtuU7YL_9MKrnlWNuFiCgEnwS2LaRZWTYoCKT5emGa4ZaS_C80QYUwWX65TttRQcK9LT3oE7t1wl3IdknpTFw-jGL7LlvhuQ2fin8P5Y2OdURos26SQ-JbURubl2IjUCvadSYyT7gglcxEBXvE7jYLlA-KpBkKIGyzpzNqVBRCgpvBFoo8y61CRtj98BOfgoFejngFG3F3p-gjFOf3-8pk2D-JsVecGNxqT4VdnjRmOXJRXa1x9Ug==\" target=\"_blank\">special 100th anniversary tour to Machu Picchu<\/a> will  take  us to Machu Picchu on July 24, 2011, the 100th Anniversary of the   discovery of the famous citadel by Hiram Bingham!  <strong>The tour will be  escorted by Christopher Heaney<\/strong>,  author of several books about Hiram  Bingham. We can also provide additional side trips before or after this itinerary if you would like to do so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1915,  as workers continued to clear brush and excavate Machu Picchu, Hiram  Bingham also traveled an old Inca path, over passes, along the ridges,  and through jungle, arriving at Machu Picchu. This path is now known as  the <a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?llr=j4ntqqcab&amp;et=1104997023391&amp;s=0&amp;e=001FfXgX21640EhrMOy5G2G5yn8WqCbNqoXDNHii3si1u98NrHSnKqDb57-Zhch3j_nqGTO_Xgmbt2c6l4adESugCgGuWHhCDzv33iOwVWoGbqbfUSei0WKPnbWTojsVuPIi5d-1CiGGaaQLFi67r7tEsQkba4zYwJvoKO9_r2cDGRcUzThTsf41lwvMdtFuBaeOpFJoRGW7VMZYc6cMoQgiQ==\" target=\"_blank\">Inca Trail<\/a>, a route that trekkers enjoy today by the hundreds!<\/p>\n<p>There are strict regulations for the <a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?llr=j4ntqqcab&amp;et=1104997023391&amp;s=0&amp;e=001FfXgX21640EhrMOy5G2G5yn8WqCbNqoXDNHii3si1u98NrHSnKqDb57-Zhch3j_nqGTO_Xgmbt2c6l4adESugCgGuWHhCDzv33iOwVWoGbqbfUSei0WKPnbWTojsVuPIi5d-1CiGGaaQLFi67r7tEsQkba4zYwJvoKO9_r2cDGRcUzThTsf41lwvMdtFuBaeOpFJoRGW7VMZYc6cMoQgiQ==\" target=\"_blank\">Inca Trail to Machu Picchu trek<\/a>,  including a limited number of permits (500 each day), to preserve the  trail and surroundings for future visitors to enjoy. Permits for 2011  are sold out through June and half of the dates in July. \u00a0Contact us for  availability. \u00a0If you can travel in September or October, you will have  excellent weather and fewer crowds!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Train to Machu Picchu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The easiest way to get to Machu Picchu is by train. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?llr=j4ntqqcab&amp;et=1104997023391&amp;s=0&amp;e=001FfXgX21640EhrMOy5G2G5yn8WqCbNqoXDNHii3si1u98NrHSnKqDb57-Zhch3j_nqGTO_Xgmbt2c6l4adESugCgGuWHhCDzv33iOwVWoGbqbfUSei0WKPnbWTojsVuPIi5d-1CiGGaaQLFi67r7tEsQkba4zYwJv-3jjRxW_k8-syd3Md9J0VODs3aGKitkRAdTiM8-REMubWPSJhOZvA01r-orUgdC9\" target=\"_blank\">Vistadome Train ride<\/a> starts in Cusco or Ollantaytambo and goes along the Urubamba River,  arriving in Aguas Calientes the town at the base of Machu Picchu&#8217;s  ridge. \u00a0A shuttle bus takes you to the entrance to Machu Picchu and you  will enjoy a guided tour of the famous citadel. \u00a0Your guide will be very  knowledgable about the Inca culture, the history of the site and the  experiences of Hiram Bingham.<\/p>\n<p>Stay  overnight in Aguas Calientes, and go early the next morning to avoid the  crowds that come on the train, and get great photos! You can hike to  Inti Punku (sun gate) where the Inca Trail trekkers arrive, or climb  Wayna Picchu to get a different view of the ruins. \u00a0You need a ticket to  climb Wayna Picchu; it is free but there is a limited supply. \u00a0And  early start will ensure a ticket! \u00a0These extra hikes are possible with  the <a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?llr=j4ntqqcab&amp;et=1104997023391&amp;s=0&amp;e=001FfXgX21640EhrMOy5G2G5yn8WqCbNqoXDNHii3si1u98NrHSnKqDb57-Zhch3j_nqGTO_Xgmbt2c6l4adESugCgGuWHhCDzv33iOwVWoGbqbfUSei0WKPnbWTojsVuPIi5d-1CiGGaaQLFi67r7tEsQkba4zYwJvbH4M5w2ylcsNB1iHzMmbWjtD57iMSrwgRKOwfxKchP6gkkrpBkWp6XuhcBhviMpn\" target=\"_blank\">two-day Train to Machu Picchu excursion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Peru\/Yale Controversy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Space  does not allow a full discussion of the controversy that has strained  relations between Peru and the USA (specifically Yale University). \u00a0When  Hiram Bingham cleared, dug, and found caves and buildings, he took  bones, pottery shards, and other artifacts and shipped them to the USA,  giving them to Yale.
