{"id":3590,"date":"2013-11-11T16:32:08","date_gmt":"2013-11-11T22:32:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventureswithinreach.com\/travel\/?p=3590"},"modified":"2013-11-08T10:20:57","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T16:20:57","slug":"9-things-i-learned-about-traveling-in-peru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventureswithinreach.com\/travel\/2013\/11\/11\/9-things-i-learned-about-traveling-in-peru\/","title":{"rendered":"9 Things I Learned about Traveling in Peru"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some things to keep in mind when <a title=\"traveling to peru\" href=\"http:\/\/adventureswithinreach.com\/peru\/?c=tour&amp;d=2\">traveling to Peru<\/a>!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Taxis<\/strong> are not metered, so be sure to get the price before getting in the taxi.\u00a0 If a hotel arranges a taxi for you, it will probably be one of the safer taxis, but it might be twice as expensive.<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/adventureswithinreach.com\/peru\/where_to_go.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Traveling to Peru\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5512\/10694165293_fdf1919273_n.jpg?resize=320%2C240\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peru Immigration Card<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You are given an <strong>Immigration Card<\/strong> (small white piece of paper) when you go through immigration at the Lima Airport.\u00a0 You NEED this paper every time you check into a hotel and also when you leave the country.\u00a0 If you do not have the Immigration Card, the hotels will charge you an 18% VAT tax, and it will be complicated leaving Peru.<\/li>\n<li>Some of the airports will have <strong>stairs<\/strong>, so be prepared to carry your carry-on luggage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DO NOT drink the water<\/strong> from the tap.\u00a0 Most nicer hotels will provide 1 bottle of water per person per day at no charge.\u00a0 Others will have it available for sale.\u00a0 Or bring your own Steripen or sterilization pills.<\/li>\n<li>Have <strong>toilet paper<\/strong> handy just in case.\u00a0 Some public toilets will not have toilet seats.\u00a0 It is preferred that you throw toilet paper in the trash instead of flushing it down the toilet.<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/adventureswithinreach.com\/peru\/overview.php?trip=1_day__Pisac_Ruins_and_Market_tour_-_Cusco_%28half_day%29\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Shopping at the Pisac Market in the Sacred Valley\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5480\/10612336044_83de038177_n.jpg?resize=320%2C240\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shopping at the Pisac Market<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>U.S. dollars<\/strong> (no other currency) are accepted at large stores and hotels in major towns, but not at smaller establishments or in smaller towns.\u00a0 Local markets will only take local currency.\u00a0 U.S. dollars can be used for tips of $5 or more.\u00a0 US$1 bills are harder for local people to exchange.\u00a0 No tears in the bills and no old or worn bills, or the merchant may refuse to take them.\u00a0 Look at each bill that you plan to use in Peru.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ATM&#8217;s<\/strong> are a good way to get Peruvian currency (Nuevo Soles).\u00a0 However, it can be challenging to get smaller bills.\u00a0 You can get Peruvian soles at your bank at home, but may need to order them.\u00a0 You can also exchange your money when you get to Peru.<\/li>\n<li>You can buy a <strong>Sim card and a phone<\/strong> at the Lima Airport.\u00a0 You can also buy them at any Claro store, but their English may be limited.<\/li>\n<li>Do not bring any &#8220;<strong>coca<\/strong>&#8221; products back to the U.S. &#8212; no coca leaves, no coca tea, no coca candy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some things to keep in mind when traveling to Peru!
