About Bolivia


The main language in Bolivia is Spanish. However, 36 other languages (including Aymara and Quechua) also have official status.


The official currency in Bolivia is Boliviano (Bs). There are coins of 10, 20 and 50 cents; 1, 2 and 5 Bolivianos. Notes are 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 bolivianos.

At present, 1 US dollar is equivalent to 6.96 Bs.

When calling Bolivia from abroad, you must dial the country code of +591.

Tri-band cell phones will work in most areas. You may also want to consider renting one or getting a global cell phone. If you own an unlocked tri-band phone you can purchase a SIM card and obtain a local number.

In Bolivia, current electricity is 220 volts AC 50 cycles, except in La Paz, there are both 110 and 220 volts. Plugs are American style so adapters are required.

Plug types vary by hotel and accommodation, most used in Bolivia are bipolar (round and flat).
