Day 1: Day trip to Otavalo Indigenous Market, Peguche, and Cotacachi (L)
Today's journey will be a symphony of colors, flavors and nature. After a convenient hotel pick-up, you will embark on a scenic drive north of Quito, making exciting stops en route. First, you will have the chance to try the delightful Andean fruit, Chirimoya, setting the tone for the day ahead.
Passing the Cayambe volcano, with its breathtaking landscape, flower plantations, and quaint villages, you will sample the traditional buttery pastry, Bizcochos de Cayambe, which are often enjoyed with a special leaf-wrapped cheese or some caramel. Energized by these treats, you will then reach San Pablo Lake and the majestic Imbabura volcano, offering stunning photo opportunities from a special viewpoint near the main road.
Continuing to the vibrant town of Otavalo, explore the vibrant market, brimming with art, music and cultural charm. Stroll through the colorful aisles of textiles, intricate hand-made crafts and engage with local artisans while you purchase unique souvenirs and traditional artwork.
A visit to Peguche unveils an enchanting journey through an artisan workshop, where vivid insights into the traditional art of tapestry-making will be taught by the experts themselves. A tasty lunch will be served at a local venue, where you can bask in the rich cultural and natural ambiance the region offers. Afterwards, you will continue your adventure and exploration journey.
The charming town of Cotacachi, located in a valley between the Imbabura and Cotacachi volcanoes, is famous for its thriving leather industry and warm weather year-round. Its cobblestone streets and plazas will lead the way to Cuicocha. The impressive Cuicocha crater lake offers another opportunity to capture the breathtaking Andean landscape and to learn about the cultural significance the lake holds among the local indigenous groups.
At the end of the tour, you will be transported to your hotel in Quito.
