Sense the depth of history as you drive past Parliament Buildings, City Hall, the Slave Lodge, and the Castle of Good Hope, originally built as a maritime replenishment station and now the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa! We walk around the Grand Parade square which has its own historical significance, and hear the brief history of District Six en-route to a visit at the Company Gardens where we walk through the landscaped gardens.

Learn more about the history of the Bo-Kaap and its people as we move up the cobblestoned hills to the Malay Quarter, and marvel at the ice-cream colours of the quaint Bo-Kaap homes. Trace the moves of a professional diamond cutter as he creates every girl's dream stone with a visit to a diamond cutting factory.

After learning more about the history of diamonds and gold in South Africa, we drive past the V&A Waterfront and Cape Town Stadium before returning to your hotel.

You will either start or end with Table Mountain depending on the weather.

Head over to the market at the Old Biscuit Mill for lunch. It has food stalls, restaurants, shops, and art galleries, It is open 7 days a week, typically 10am-4pm.

Then we recommend visiting the Shimansky Diamond Experience at Rockwell. They offer a free tour through the factory, the history of the diamond industry, a museum, and a friendly showroom. Day 5: Free Day (Robben Island, V&A Waterfront, Helicopter) (B)

Enjoy a free day in this cosmopolitan city. Here are some ideas for your day!

If you like hiking, start the day with a 1-hour hike up Lion's Head. Take a taxi or Uber to the trail head. Be prepared with water, jacket, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

Robben Island is where Nelson Mandela was a prisoner for 18 years. You take a ferry to the island and have a tour of the prison. It is a fascinating history lesson in apartheid. The tour route includes the graveyard of people who died from leprosy, the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe's house, the Bluestone quarry, the army and navy bunkers and the Maximum Security Prison where thousands of South Africa's freedom fighters were incarcerated for years. The tour culminates with a viewing of Nelson Mandela's cell. Plan on 3.5 hours with the boat ride. There are 3-4 departures a day, and book in advance as it often sells out.

The ferry for Robben Island starts and ends at the V&A Waterfront, so this is great to explore this fun area. The Victoria & Albert Waterfront has restaurants with great views of the harbor, a shopping mall, and street performers. There is also a giant carousel (Cape Wheel) and the Two Ocean Aquarium.

There are sightseeing helicopter tours of varying lengths. The shortest option is about $115/person, which takes you along the western shore to Camp's Bay. There is even a tour including a 2-course lunch with wine pairing at the Twelve Apostles for $155/person.

Oranjezicht City Farm Market is nearby the Waterfront and open on Saturdays and Sundays.

If the V&A is too crowded for you, and it is a warm, sunny day, try the Grand Africa Cafe & Beach instead.
