Day 5: Free Day (Robben Island, V&A Waterfront, Helicopter) (B)

Enjoy a free day in this cosmopolitan city. Here are some ideas for your day!

If you like hiking, start the day with a 1-hour hike up Lion's Head. Take a taxi or Uber to the trail head. Be prepared with water, jacket, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

Robben Island is where Nelson Mandela was a prisoner for 18 years. You take a ferry to the island and have a tour of the prison. It is a fascinating history lesson in apartheid. The tour route includes the graveyard of people who died from leprosy, the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe's house, the Bluestone quarry, the army and navy bunkers and the Maximum Security Prison where thousands of South Africa's freedom fighters were incarcerated for years. The tour culminates with a viewing of Nelson Mandela's cell. Plan on 3.5 hours with the boat ride. There are 3-4 departures a day, and book in advance as it often sells out.

The ferry for Robben Island starts and ends at the V&A Waterfront, so this is great to explore this fun area. The Victoria & Albert Waterfront has restaurants with great views of the harbor, a shopping mall, and street performers. There is also a giant carousel (Cape Wheel) and the Two Ocean Aquarium.

There are sightseeing helicopter tours of varying lengths. The shortest option is about $115/person, which takes you along the western shore to Camp's Bay. There is even a tour including a 2-course lunch with wine pairing at the Twelve Apostles for $155/person.

Oranjezicht City Farm Market is nearby the Waterfront and open on Saturdays and Sundays.

If the V&A is too crowded for you, and it is a warm, sunny day, try the Grand Africa Cafe & Beach instead.
