We had a wonderful time in Brazil and Peru and AWR and Gretchen’s travel arrangements were flawless. Special mention to our lady guide in Sacred Valley, Claudia, she was very helpful and nice.

We are extremely likely to recommend Adventures Within Reach to our friends, family, and coworkers. You guys would be the first one I contact for any locations where I need an agency.

Our top three highlights from the trip are:

1) Iguazu Falls was amazing. Peru and Brazil, generally, were way above expectations. The people were very nice everywhere we went, food was good and standards generally high.

2) Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu are must-visits. We also really loved the Sonesta hotel in Yucay, Sacred Valley. Great value and beautiful property. We actually liked it better than all the Belmonds.

3) The Delfin III is a nice boat for a quick cruise on the upper amazon. Good quality rooms, interesting programs and amazing staff.

It has been great working with Gretchen. Will not hesitate to recommend to all my friends and family. I wish you could have organized some of our other travels.

Advice for future travelers: If budget permits, stay at the Belmond in Iguazu Falls. It makes a lot of difference to have access to the falls when the crowd clears. The temperature at Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu may be cool but when the sun is out, it’s scorching hot. You definitely need a good hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and water.

Incredible trip. Exquisite. Perfect in every way. Our expectations were blown out of the water by the incredible tour experience. It truly was a trip of a lifetime. Thank you so much for all your help along the way!

The food and service from the staff during the trek was SO MUCH more than we had expected. We sat down to prepared meals at a table with chairs 3 times per day, plus tea-time every evening AND snacks to choose from each morning as we were departing the campsite. The meals came in courses and were not only filling and delicious but plated nicely and served by a waiter in a uniform. If we ate all the bread in the basket, they would bring more. 3 of us in the group were vegetarians and that was not only not a problem but the vegetarian meals were incredible! Meals at this camp were cleaner and included better service and better quality food than I’ve had at plenty of restaurants in the US.

We also had a hand-wash station with actual warm water and soap before every meal. Staff woke us up each morning with a cup of tea delivered to our tent door! They also brought little tubs of warm water to our tent each morning and evening for washing. There were tarps for us to put our bags on and if there were rain drops, the staff would cover the bags with a second tarp! As a seasoned backpacker, this is not what I expected at all. I felt pampered.

AWR left us a bottle of wine in our first Cuzco hotel room. That was so sweet.

One last comment is regarding the fact that the members of our group all booked through different agencies. There were 10 trekkers on our Inka Trail trip, but only 4 of us had booked through AWR. We had the best hotels and the best information. We 4 had been offered the additional hike up Huayna Picchu but none of the non-AWR customers even knew about it. We were at the best hotel in Aguas Calientes, El MaPi, while the other 6 customers were at a lesser hotel. Presumably they paid less, but at the end of the 4-day hike we walked through Machu Picchu, took the bus down to town, and then walked together as a group to El MaPi Hotel where they dropped the 4 of us off we felt so pampered. It was lovely, clean, posh,and luxurious and dinner plus a welcome drink were included! We were so excited to sleep in a comfy bed at this fancy place! The rest of our group then proceeded up the hill to their lodging which was a disappointment to them. This only reflected well on AWR.

In Cuzco, Frank picked us up from the airport with tea and snacks, helped us check in to our hotel, took us to a lunch place and got us the best table in the house, then he escorted us to the start of the City Tour. I had no idea we would get that kind of service. All the transfer services were incredible and the agents were so nice and helpful.

Our hotels were excellent! Clean, affordable, comfy, breakfast everywhere, lovely lovely lovely. Service like I’ve never had. No problems leaving our luggage there for storage. Peru is doing it right with tourism and AWR knows how to pick the right spots!

Working with AWR was excellent – I love, love, love all the pre-trip information. Best travel company I’ve ever used by far. I’m spoiled now.

The Inka Trail trek was the highlight of your trip! Walking, looking around, and learning about the Inkas. Having no worries all day, just walking and eating in beautiful scenery, and periodically getting a lesson in history or botany from one of our guides. It was so relaxing.

The morning of our first full trekking day, we had an introduction ceremony. All the porters told their name, where they are from, how many children they have, and maybe something else about them. Then the customers did the same. Carlos, our guide, translated. That was such a special thing, to be able to understand a little bit about each other. We were all together at camp but the staff were working and we were relaxing, and there was a language barrier, so we didn’t get to talk much. Therefore I really appreciated this introduction! (Of course, we talked to Carlos and his assistant Juri a lot as they both had excellent English.)

We hiked with 4 other Americans in their 40’s like us, a Swedish couple in their 70’s, and a Dutch couple in their late 20’s. The Dutchman brought along a muted plastic trombone as he is a professional musician and needed to practice. During the trek, one of the Americans in the group had a birthday. The trombonist played Happy Birthday for her and the chefs MADE AN ACTUAL CAKE at the mountain campsite. I have no idea how they did it. It was like banana bread, but round, with layers and frosting and even little candy sprinkles. It was tremendous.

I reached out to AWR because I had a referral from my former boss. That’s not why I booked with you guys though. I had sent a few emails out to other companies and either didn’t get responses or they were incomplete. I heard back from AWR immediately, in perfect English, with not only answers to all my questions but even more answers that I didn’t know I needed. I chose you because of the excellent response to my initial inquiry.

I already have recommended AWR to family and friends, and I’ll be back for another trip with AWR for sure! Thank you!

Working with Gretchen was great. I would add that having personal guides on several excursions was very nice. We really enjoyed the mountain bike ride.

The hotels were excellent. We really enjoyed the Tocuyeras Hotel in Cusco. It was quiet, restful, and the people were extremely helpful.

The favorite part of our trip was the Salkantay Trek. Our guides Nepali and Salvador were excellent. The organization was exceptional and the food was amazing and delicious. We liked being the only Americans out of 12 people and really enjoyed getting to know everyone. We really liked that we were with the same guide from leaving Cusco, through the trek and Machu Picchu, and back to Cusco. We could have used a little more time to learn about Machu Picchu, but without maybe understanding completely made the trade off with climbing Wayna Picchu. Not sure there was a better way, but something to consider.

All in all, it was a wonderful trip. We had great weather, our guides were all very good, and our in-country transportation was very easy. One thing we would probably do on a future trip is to build in a bit more downtime, as we did seem to be always going from one thing to the next. Exciting, adventurous, but also tiring.

We wanted to once again iterate that we had a wonderful trip and appreciate all that Gretchen did to make it that way. For the mountain bike and kayak, it was just us and a guide, and for the Via Ferrata it was just one other couple and ourselves. Made it a very personal experience which we truly enjoyed. The guides for the trek worked to get to know all of us and make us comfortable. The trek was awesome!

Our family of six had an incredible time – we loved the Amazon lodge and our guide, Oscar, was terrific. He was very flexible for the adventures we wanted. I would very much be a 10 to recommend AWR.

Probably our two favorite adventures were going onto the unofficial monkey island – and being so patient and then after about an hour, they came down to us – one member at a time. Even climbed on our guide for the fruit – was a bit crazy making but so cool. Then we got to go to the National Park and the garden of literally Eden with all the fruits and plants (tried so many cool things) and then walked up about 45 minutes and did a slow float back to the Madre de Dios on a cool canoe. Birds and the sunset – epic day. We loved the food and the people. Thanks for your help on this planning and great communication!

Ive already recommended AWR to my family and friends. You were an amazing help in the process of me booking my trip. Especially because I booked my trip alone without my parents and I was also traveling alone. So having you along the way for the Jungle part was just perfect! My favorite part of my Amazon Jungle adventure was the “mud” walk & outing on Lake Sandoval! It was super muddy because it is wet season, but I loved treking through the jungle in the mud, it made it more challenging and interesting! I also saw a bunch of amazing animals on this outing! Monkeys, parots, otters, huge butterflies, big spiders, killer ants, and more. It was aweeesome!! I just also HAVE to mention, the food was perfection! Everything was hot/cold depending on what it was, and it all tasted wonderful. To be completely honest I would not change a thing! Everything from the rooms, to the excursions, to the food/drinks, the staff, all amazing!!

Thank you for everything again Gretchen! The 3 days in the Jungle was an PERFECT start to my Peru adventure!

Everything was great. Cusco is a beautiful city, really exceeded our expectations. Our trek guide, Jeiko Aragon, the porters and the chief on the trek were excellent. The local guides, for Cusco tour and Sacred Valley tour, were excellent. Anne and I are not experienced hikers. We were especially appreciative of the way Jeiko kept us safe and helped us and guided us through some of the more difficult parts of the trail.

The food on the trek was really first rate. The various transfers, airports, Peru Rail ect….were flawless.

Probably the biggest stand-out on this really spectacular trip was James Echegaray, our personal concierge you arranged for us. He was very thoughtful, very helpful, very friendly and kind and patient. He put us very much at ease being in a foreign country. Really a great guy.

You were very helpful Barbara in helping us prepare the trip. You were great with my many questions. Thank you.

Overall, the trek was the experience of a lifetime; a great adventure that we will never forget. And Peru is a very beautiful country.

The trip was awesome. It felt very special because of the way it was organized – especially the Inca Trail – the tour group you used has 6 kms more to their trek which offset our group by 3 hours from the crowds. Our homestay was also soooo much better than others we compared to – didn’t feel phony and there was no pressure to buy anything like other people experienced.

The guides were great especially Moises (10++)who was the fishing guide and a legend – there are books written about this guy!!!!!!!

The highlights of our trip were the private feel of the Inca trail, reaching the sun gate and the amazon basin in the Muyuna lodge area.

Have travelled to Africa with AWR and was impressed. I have booked other South American trips myself and found it exhausting spending hours on the internet checking into stuff. This trip with AWR fit into the budget our friends had and it was a better or comparable deal when compared to a couple of other companies I checked into.

Carlos, our guide, was FANTASTIC! All the boat drivers were wonderful! The food was excellent. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The bungalow was mosquito proof. My husband and I did not get one mosquito bite due to the use of Deet and the netting over our bungalow. Our airport and hotel pick up was more than we expected and made us feel very welcome. Seeing animals in their natural environment was thrilling. Seeing a sloth was a highlight. I will never forget it.

Amazing! We loved our group, the porters, and Erick! Erick knew so much and was so enthusiastic. We saw another guide along the way who didn’t even go into one of the incan sites with his group. He just said “go for it if you want” whereas Erick not only went with us, he also had us sit down and explained the history and theories of everything asking questions as we went to ensure our comprehension. We asked to spend extra time at one site and he waited below covering our bags when it started to rain. we were incredibly grateful to have him as our guide. The cook was really good too and made us a cake on our last night! How do you make a cake in a tent from scratch? Honestly the food on the trek was probably the best food we had in Peru! We will never forget the amazing experience we had on the Inca trail with our guide, group, and porters.

Barbara is amazing! She helped us with everything along the way and answered any questions we had promptly and offered advice on other options (such as visiting the rainforest and climbing Huayna Picchu)! We chose Adventures Within Reach because of her quick responses to our initial questions as we were considering who to book with and she continued to help us with questions even up to the day we left.

It was an experience we will remember forever. The Inca trail was our favorite part because of our guide, porters, cook and our fellow trekkers. We also loved that our group was so diverse – representing 5 continents!!

We got up at 2 am as a group to go be first in line the final morning and were first to the sun gate!! When we arrived our guide brought out champagne and we had a quick celebration for being first. It was something we will never forget!

We had a wonderful time! All four of us said we would absolutely recommend this experience to others. We loved everything about the lodge, our favorite excursion was probably the Lake Sandoval. However, within the lodge, the staff was kind and courteous, the food was amazing, and the accommodations were excellent.

A favorite moment from the trip was on the first day while visiting the fruit farm – we met a rescued baby Spider Monkey who sat on all our heads and was so friendly. Such a great first day experience. We also loved seeing alligators and giant river otters. The whole experience was just spectacular.

I think my favorite part was the canoe trip, that and the canopy tour. Everything was amazing! The down time was exceptional to really get relaxed, enjoy the sounds of the rainforest.

I would suggest offering the opportunity to stay a little bit longer. There were so many tours and WE LOVED THEM ALL. But the opportunity to stay that last evening and leave the following day would have been lovely to get a little more downtime in the lodge/field station area. I would have opted for the same itinerary, but the option to leave that last day or the following. I would have paid for an extra evening at that beautiful place!!!!! 🙂

Our favorite part of the Peruvian Amazon was the add-on of the kayaking. We opted to do that one afternoon in lieu of the botanical garden excursion. It was amazing. Our main guide Uriel was great too, he was very knowledgeable, spoke great English, and was a perfect match for us. I can’t really think of any suggestions for improvement, you did an amazing job. I will definitely strongly consider AWR for future trips.

The best tour of the trip was the lake sandoval trip, we saw river otters (which are normally hard to spot), macaws, and plenty of other animals. It was amazing and our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. The accommodation was also impeccable, and their service was highly commendable, we were treated like royalty! All the meals were absolutely delicious and they always managed to cater to my allergies which was great!

[W]e have already recommended the company to a number of other people who have asked us about our tour in the Amazon, it is very affordable and an amazing few days.
