Day 1: 7-DAY GROUP SAFARI / Drive to Lake Manyara or Tarangire, afternoon game drive (BLD)

wp-content/uploads/itineraries/Safari/lakemanyara_monkey010708 (8).jpg

Today your safari guide drives you from Moshi (or Arusha) to Lake Manyara (December-March) or Tarangire (June-October) with lunch en route for an afternoon game drive.

Lake Manyara is tucked beneath the Rift Valley wall. A thin green band of forest flanked by the 600 metres sheer high red and brown cliffs of the escarpment and the shores of the soda lake which gives name to the park. Famous for its tree-climbing lions, Manyara features nearly 400 different species of bird, red-billed quelea, pelicans, cormorants and thousands of flamingos.

OR

Tarangire is famous for its huge herds of elephant and baobab trees. Throughout the dry season, thirsty antelope and elephant trek hundreds of kilometres to drink at the Tarangire River.

Meals included: Lunch, Dinner
Budget/Mid-Range Accommodations: Endoro Lodge

Day 2: Drive to Serengeti, afternoon game drive (BLD)

wp-content/uploads/itineraries/Safari/safari-serengeti (1).jpg

Drive to the Serengeti for an afternoon game drive in search of the migration (Ndutu area December-March and Moru Kopjes area June-October).

Arguably Africa's greatest national park, the Serengeti (meaning "endless plains") is a massive park and home to a yearly migration of more than a million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle undertaking their long trek to new grazing grounds. In return, a wealth of predators including lions, leopards, cheetah and hyena also inhabit the region.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Budget/Mid-Range Accommodations: Serengeti Halisi Camp

Day 3: Serengeti, full day game drive (BLD)

wp-content/uploads/itineraries/Safari/serengeti_elephant011108 (17).jpg

Full day game drive in Serengeti, lunch at Visitor's Center.

The crucial characteristics of the Serengeti ecosystem have changed little in over a million years. Serengeti's boundless plains are sprinkled with wooded hills, towering termite mounds, rocky kopjes and rivers lined with acacia trees. Big cats and a huge host of grazing animals roam freely, but here you also can see other unique species like mongoose, hyrax, warthog, bat-eared fox, jackals, bushbabies, monkeys, baboons, and much more.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Budget/Mid-Range Accommodations: Serengeti Halisi Camp

Day 4: Drive to Ngorongoro via optional Olduvai Gorge and Maasai village (BLD)

Drive from the Serengeti to the scenic Ngorongoro Crater enjoying wildlife viewing along the way. En route, you'll have options to visit the Olduvai Gorge and/or an authentic Maasai village.

The Olduvai Gorge delivers substantial evidence of the earliest signs of humankind, with rare hominid footprints preserved in solid rock from 3,600,000 years ago.

There are many authentic Masaai villages in the area to visit. Here you have a chance to get to know authentic Maasai families and see how real life is like for the locals. You can visit homes, watch traditional dances, and purchase homemade jewelry.

Day 5: Ngorongoro, half day game drive, drive to Lake Natron (BLD)

wp-content/uploads/itineraries/Safari/ngorongoro_rhino010908 (63).jpg

Enjoy a morning game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater.

Ngorongoro Crater is a spectacular setting and contains an abundance of wildlife with over 20,000 large animals including Tanzania's remaining black rhino. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is unique in that it allows over 40,000 Masaai pastoralists with their cattle goats and sheep to live alongside the abundant wildlife in a natural setting.

In the afternoon, drive to Mto wa Mbu and continue to Ngaresero village at Lake Natron.

Lake Natron is an almost surreal soda lake, set at an altitude of 610m, below the Rift valley escarpment, which offers incredible bird and game viewing. Natron is the only breeding ground for East Africa's millions of flamingos, which usually congregate to breed here between August and October.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Budget/Mid-Range Accommodations: Lake Natron Halisi Camp

Day 6: Lake Natron, morning game drive, afternoon waterfalls hike (BLD)

wp-content/uploads/itineraries/Safari/maasai_group010808 (22).jpg

LAKE NATRON ACTIVITIES:

Canyon hike to the Waterfalls

This is a 20 to 30-minute guided hike one-way up a scenic rocky river gorge. Wearing your Chaco or Teva-style sandals, you will be scrambling and walking through the river (sometimes waist deep). It is an excellent swim in the river and under the pretty waterfalls for a nice cool-down from the hot sun.

See Flamingos

Lake Natron is uniquely outstanding for bird watching. You can walk from your camp or from the road out on the mud flats to the edge of the water. In the dry season, this may be a half-mile walk. Flamingos breed here August-October, creating a birding spectacle that rivals almost any, anywhere in the world. However, there will be some flamingos around all year. Endemic desert birds provide a wonderful bonus for the avid birdwatcher.

Scenic Drive

Full day scenic drive around the south and west side of Lake Natron. In this area, you can drive off road. There may be animals right around the camp, but it is still safe to walk around because there are no dangerous animals in this area.

Maasai Village

There are many authentic Masaai villages in the area to visit. Here you have a chance to get to know authentic Maasai families and see how real life is like for the locals. You can visit homes, and walk with them from boma to boma, meeting the children along the way, and even help them milk the cows.
