Wheelchairs on Kilimanjaro

Climbing the tallest mountain in Africa is not your average adventure. And this group of climbers is not your average group of mountaineers. Along with their adventurous spirit and abundance of sports and mountaineering experience, this group will have something not commonly found on most mountain adventures – wheelchairs!

In June 2008, Tom McCurdy and Kyle Packer ( in wheelchairs adapted for backcountry), 14-year old Sage McCurdy, and Dana Olson-Elle, Director of the Idaho State University, Outdoor Adventure Center, will be climbing the 19,340 foot high Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Wheelchairs on trek

Mount Kilimanjaro, located three degrees south of the equator in northeastern Tanzania, is the tallest mountain in Africa, and the highest freestanding mountain in the world. “Kilimanjaro is our hottest destination,” says Robin Paschall, owner of Adventures Within Reach. “Of the famous “Seven Summits,” this is the easiest to get to and the easiest to climb.” It requires no technical climbing experience, and any moderately fit person can summit the mountain. On wheels it will present more of a challenge to 42-year old McCurdy, a paraplegic, and Packer, age 48, with Cerebral Palsy.

They will be using the Rongai Route for an easier more direct approach than other routes. The Rongai Route was used by Bern Goosen last year when he broke his own world records for climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in a wheelchair. The McCurdy group is not attempting to break any records though. “We are doing it for the personal challenge and adventure,” said Tom McCurdy. “This will be Sage’s first adventure travel experience. I’m doing it so he can have this experience to draw on later in life.” For most people, indeed, it can be life changing!

“We talked about doing this trip while we were in Nepal Trekking into Everest Base Camp in 1998. Kyle brought it up again last July seeking companions,” said McCurdy. “We plan on doing something like this every few years. We’ve been talking about Machu Picchu for our next adventure!”

National Geographic 50 Tours of a Lifetime

Each year, National Geographic Traveler showcases 50 of the world’s top destinations, places that every curious traveler should visit in a lifetime. This year, Adventures Within Reach was selected for our “Four Volcanoes: Mount Kenya, Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Ol Doinyo Lengai” itinerary!

Four peaks — four weeks!

This trip takes you on a “warm up” trek up Mt. Meru (14,990 feet), followed by a trek up the highest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro (19, 340 feet), then off on safari and climb up Ol Doinyo Lengai at Lake Natron (10,000 feet), and finished off with a trip to Mt. Kenya. Participants have the choice of doing a non-technical climb to Point Lenana (16, 355 feet) or a longer technical climb to the very summit (17,060 feet).

Charities Within Reach Update

There has been a lot of activity with our non-profit Charities Within Reach! We encourage all travelers to give back to the countries to which they visit, and we can help.

Garage Sale — Eco Fundraising

CWR is encouraging local Colorado people to reduce, reuse, and recycle at our second annual fund raiser garage sale. Besides the basic sale of quality used items, there will be a bake sale, lemonade stand, and photo sale.

It will be held on June 28, 2008 behind the Adventures Within Reach office, and we can use donations and volunteers with this fun event!

Free A Child

CWR is sponsoring a volunteer trip to Nepal in honor of the 10th anniversary of Free A Child. This 13-day itinerary shows you the project in motion in the remote at-risk villages as well as taking you to some of the most beautiful and interesting regions of Nepal.

Shalom Orphanage

This is a popular stop for volunteers and donors while on safari in Tanzania. We have received donations of goods, time, and money from churches, schools, various organizations, and many individuals.

Global Porters Project

CWR is now working with the International Mountain Explorers Connection (IMEC) to gather and transfer clothing and gear to Tanzania and Nepal. Thanks to all the volunteers who have taken over extra bags of gear to be donated to the local porters!

Peru Schools

CWR continues to support remote schools in various parts of Peru. Our focus is to assist schools that are not in the main tourist areas and do not see many visitors or donations. CWR is now supporting children in Boca Amigo, a village in the remote jungle of Peru, the Children’s Land Promotion Center (CPTiNi) in Puerto Maldonado, and the Rumira public school near Ollantaytambo.

We can use your help!

CWR is always looking for volunteers to help with the various projects. You can live anywhere in the world and still help.

  • Events and fund raising
  • Volunteer programs
  • General office work, recordkeeping
  • Graphics for brochures, etc.

New Galapagos and Ecuador Fees

Galapagos Fuel Surcharge
All Galapagos cruise bookings for 2008 will have a fuel surcharge of $100/person for 3-4 night itineraries and $200/person for 7-night itineraries.

Pay in full by April 30 for any cruise in 2008, and the fuel surcharge is waived!

Galapagos Tourist Card
All tourists visiting the Galapagos are also now required to have a $10 tourist card. This card will help control the number of visitors to the islands and also reduce the amount of paperwork visitors have to fill out. AWR will combine this fee with the national park tax for a total of $130/adult and $70/child.

Quito Hotel Tax
Starting April 1, 2008, all Quito hotels will be charging a new tourism tax to all visitors. This tax is $1/room/night for first-class hotels and $2/room/night for deluxe hotels. Visitors will have to pay this tax directly to the hotel upon check-out. This tax only applies to hotels in Quito.
