Climbing the Toubkal, North Africa’s Highest Peak (Morocco)

Trekking in the High Atlas mountains is an amazing experience for adventure travelers who love mountains and culture. It is also an opportunity to bag a peak, the Jbel Toubkal, North Africa and Morocco’s highest peak at 13,671 feet (4,167 meters) above sea level. You’ll also experience Berber culture in the several villages including Imlil, the heart of the Toubkal National Park.

Last April I had the opportunity to visit this amazing region and develop the treks offered by Adventures Within Reach. Trekkers have two options for visiting the region – choosing to visit during the snowy season or during the summer season.

Summer Season: Late May Through September: Most people visit the high Atlas during this period. You can trek to the summit of the Toubkal without worry about snow, although light snow cover is still possible in May. July and August are very hot in Marrakesh, but temperatures are fine in the mountains and great for camping at high altitude.

Snowy Season: October Through Early May: This period can be a great option for experienced mountaineers. October can still be pretty dry and an extension of summer trekking conditions although with cooler temperatures. By February enough snow has fallen to usually make for excellent ski touring conditions. April and May are Spring conditions and climbing the Toubkal usually still requires crampons and an ice axe.

In April 2011 there was still enough snow for ski touring at the higher elevations and enough snow to stop the mules about 1 kilometer before the hut. Here is a photo of snow conditions at the hut:

Despite the abundant snow at higher elevations there is still excellent trekking below 10,000 feet. For a clear idea of the conditions and experience you can view my video of my trip:

FEEDBACK FROM CUSTOMERS

“The Eclipse staff did a great job and presented a variety of activities which you could participate in or not.  The guides were very good and appeared to be well versed on their subjects.  I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone.”

“The Galapagos was a wonderful trip!  It is a very active trip with 2-3 off ship excursions daily.  I now understand why they offered the 3 X’s daily towel service, which was greatly appreciated as we were always hot, sticky and bathed in salt air. The cocktail hour/informative sessions and next day briefing were very well done.  I think all the guests looked forward to that time of day!

It was clean, well appointed, with plenty of closet space.  The crew and naturalists were excellent.  The menus had an international theme, which was fun, and were attractively presented. The highlights were the incredible marine and wildlife we saw and the caliber of our naturalists. Our weather was also perfect all week! Lucky us. I also appreciated not being surrounded by a convoy of other boats. The most we ever saw were two at an anchorage.

I felt the trip was fairly priced and would definitely recommend the “luxury” option to my friends.”

Mont Blanc Treks From Chamonix: The Best of the Alps

The Mont Blanc Seen from the TMB

Trekking in the Alps is one of our favorite summer hiking holidays. From June through September you can hike the Mont Blanc region with experienced local guides at a reasonable price.

The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is perhaps the most popular trek in Europe. While the entire 180 mile circuit typically takes 10 days, we recommend a shorter trip with 6 days of hiking. The shorter trip has several advantages: you still make a complete circuit, we offer weekly departures from June through September, and you can explore other hikes near Chamonix before and after your trek. The TMB is completed in 6 days with the help of car transfers along some of the sections.

Here are some of the advantages of this trek:

  • Expert local trekking guides
  • All meals are included during the trek
  • A bag follows you around the mountain, so you hike with a light day pack
  • Flexible arrival and departure – you just need to arrive the day before the hiking begins

If you have more time in Chamonix we recommend arranging a or two day with a private trekking guide before your trek. A day with a private guide will allow you to trek to areas off the main circuit and to have a personalized interaction with a guide. Such days are the perfect opportunity to climb a peak such as the Buet or to learn more about the area’s history, flora and fauna.

Glacier Trekking

You can also try a glacier trek, rock climbing, or white water rafting! Opting for a shorter Tour du Mont Blanc trek will allow you to spend more time exploring other treasures of this amazing region. You might also want to explore further afield in the stunning Aravis, a gorgeous area dominated by limestone cliffs and only about 1 hour from Chamonix by car.

Cambodia: 7 Unique Travel Experiences

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat

Travelers return from Cambodia with great stories, amazing photographs and fond memories. People enjoy the wonders of Angkor Wat and the smiles of the Cambodian people. Most travelers only visit Angkor Wat, but the country offers a lot more to curious and adventurous visitors. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of a trip to Cambodia:

Cambodia: Biking in the Countryside

Cambodia: Biking in the Countryside

1) Tour by bike. You can build biking into any itinerary. We recommend exploring the ruins by bike and also spending one day biking through the countryside. You never know what you’ll find along the way and a day on a bike might be the best one you’ll have on the entire trip.

2) Fly over Angkor. You can get good views of the temples from a few select vantage points, but the best way to admire the expanse of the Angkor plains is from a plane! But not just any plane… book a morning flight in a two-person open-air mircolight plane. Don’t forget your camera!

3) Angkor at Sunset and Sunrise. Make sure to get up early and stay late at the ruins to experience the temples in the early morning and evening light. In the middle of the day you can always spend time relaxing by the pool at your hotel or take a nap to catch up on sleep!

4) Hike in the mountains. A half-day hike in the Kulen Mountain Range will allow you to take in a peaceful setting and discover some remote ruins carved into the stone along a river bank.

5) Visit charities and NGOs. You can visit several humanitarian projects during a trip. In a day with the  Cambodian-Dutch Organization you can visit a health center that has donated thousands of pairs of eye glasses and then a primary school where you’ll have a chance to speak English and share your life with local school children. Near Phnom Penh you can visit the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre that has helped to protect Asiatic black bears and the smaller sun bear. Also in Phnom Penh you can visit the Apsara Foundation, which aims to educate poor Cambodian children to become professional dancers and musicians, simultaneously conserving Cambodian arts and culture.

6) Start in Phnom Penh. Cambodia’s capital is the ideal starting place for anyone interested in getting to know this fascinating country. In Phnom Penh you’ll experience contemporary Cambodia and also be able to explore the country’s past. An important visit for many people is to Choeng Ek, the location of the infamous Killing Fields.

7) Travel overland. Traveling overland from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap will allow you to discover the heart of the Cambodian countryside. Along the way you can stop in Skuon where the local specialty is fried spiders, visit Sambor PreiKuk, an ancient, pre-Angkorian city, and drive across  the beautiful Angkorean bridge of Spean Praptos, an engineering marvel built in the 12th century.

Kenya Volunteer Projects

Conservation and Ecology Project

Volunteer in Kenya and stay at the Mt. Kenya B&B

Volunteer in Kenya and stay at the Mt. Kenya B&B

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the local country when traveling.

Volunteer Options:

  • Community Reforestation Project
  • Organic Community Farming
  • Teaching at local schools

Location:

  • Naro Muro Village on the slopes of Mt. Kenya north of Nairobi

Lodging:

  • Mt. Kenya Hostel
  • Mt. Kenya B&B

Project Overview

This is an incredible volunteer opportunity. You will live, interact, learn and experience the lifestyle and culture of the Mt. Kenya people. You will work along side community members who desperately need help to restore their ancestral land by planting trees to prevent further land degradation. Your volunteer work within the communities themselves will alleviate the negative impact on the environment in the area. It will also improve socio-economic development, food security and sustainable livelihoods.

Deforestation is a big problem in Kenya and has most drastically taken place in the reserved forests.  Fires, illegal logging and the increased population of Kenya have encroached into the reserved forest causing dramatic deforestation in Kenya. The deforestation has severely affected the local communities, livestock and wildlife.  The climate has changed and therefore there is considerably less rainfall, which has affected the local farming and livestock, as well as the wildlife in the area.

Another issue is that the communities around Mt Kenya have watched year after year as the glaciers of Mt Kenya shrink. The cold ice streams at the equator are melting away.  The streams off Mount Kenya ran very high some years back but are now growing thin.  There are prolonged droughts, less food and the stability of food is at risk.

General tasks for volunteers

Volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of tasks such as weed control, watering plants, tree planting, tree nursery work and general maintenance. There is also an opportunity of educating other communities & school children about the importance of planting trees to promote fauna and flora.

Child Education and Special Education Project

Project Overview

There is also no question that the Naro Moru community has great needs for volunteers to help the less fortunate children of the community.  The Naro Moru community is great to be involved with because everybody is very friendly,  hospitable and appreciative.  Many people in the Naro Moru community speak English and are open to visiting and meeting with visitors.  The people of Mt Kenya have a clear understanding of the importance of cross-cultural  experiences and are always looking forward to working with people from all walks of life. The community will do everything in its power to ensure you have a great experience.  The local volunteers work alongside you and are eager to socialize, including arranging a soccer tournament or a game of volleyball.

Volunteers can work with children in the most destitute schools around Mt Kenya and other Naro Moru community social facilities.  Volunteers will support the teachers, help students with their homework, teach conversational English, plan arts and crafts projects, and bring new perspectives to the students. You can also get involved with children and young adults through extra activities like outdoor recreation and sports. The children of Naro Moru benefit dramatically from the one-on-one attention and care that the volunteers bring.

Special education

There is an extraordinary opportunity in Naro Moru to assist the special education teachers with students who have special needs.  There are many challenges facing special education in Africa but, considerable progress has been made in recent years and the issue of the special education needs are beginning to be addressed in Kenya. Volunteers with experience in special education can also bring their skills and initiative to help create lesson plans and activities for the classroom.   There are very few organizations, schools and resources for special education in Kenya. Your compassion and presence will help students develop their self- esteem and also your support and work will be vital to the success of special need students in Kenya.

General tasks for volunteers

Assist teachers and Special education teachers with students with learning challenges, communication and other developmental disabilities.

Help organize activities and educational games and sport activities.  Volunteers with experience in special education can also bring their skills and initiative to help create lesson plans and activities for the students.

Community Development Volunteer Project

Project Overview

This is an ideal volunteer work project that will allow you to use your skills and do something meaningful for the underprivileged communities. You will get to experience the local culture while living and working in some of the most beautiful parts of Kenya.

The project is dedicated to trying to improve the lives of rural communities around Mt Kenya. The community is not short of labor! Lack of resources affects the availability of facilities needed for the community. The volunteers work alongside villagers on community-initiated building projects like building schools and renovating classrooms, and working to bring clean water to areas where there is no water available.  Projects include building a community water tank.

General tasks for volunteers

Construction, repairs, engineering, and alternative energy similar to solar and wind projects.  These volunteer projects will be closely connected to the needs and demands of the Naro Moru community at the time of your volunteer project. Volunteers will assist on construction in schools, working on projects in an orphanage, restoring a community church, repairing a local family’s home, painting and renovating a classroom, engineering, and utilizing alternative energy projects that will bring.

Building for Underprivileged Community Members

Project Overview

This is a community run project that focuses on needy families in the community.  The community members will decide where to prioritize the volunteer projects at the time.  The project will be based on available funds for the project, the number of volunteers in the project and the community members available to work.

There is always a need to build shelters for people living in Naro Moru.  The needy families include single parents or grandparents caring for their orphaned grandchildren. This project depends on the goodwill and donations from the local community and sponsors.  This is a great opportunity to interact, socialize and work alongside Kenyan people to help them build a home and ensure a more prosperous future.

General tasks for volunteers

Construction, repairs, and engineering skills are important in this project. Volunteers will work alongside the needy family who will benefit from the project as well local volunteer community members.
