Bhutan Trip Report: Cultural Tours

Part of the excitement of traveling to a foreign country is visiting local places of history, museums, churches and temples, markets, schools, and theatres. This gives the traveler a sense of what makes the people who they are and helps define their culture.

Bhutan is rich with such local places! We were very impressed with the respect that people have for their historical sites, temples and monasteries and their cultural heritage. For the Bhutanese, these places are national treasures.

Sustainable Tourism and AWR

The aim of sustainable tourism is to lessen the toll that travel takes on the environment and its local cultures. Left un-monitored, destinations visited will be damaged or destroyed at a catastrophic rate. Adventures Within Reach takes steps to promote sustainable tourism by using ethically trained, local guides, using sustainable lodging, and giving back to local communities. We also help travelers minimize their impact through carbon offsetting, volunteer work, and more.

Bhutan Trip Report: Trekking

Where’s Bhutan?

“Uhh…Bhutan…where’s that?” This was a common reaction of people when we said we were going trekking in Bhutan. Many people have not heard of it and have no idea of its location in the Himalayas (north of India, south of Tibet). However, a week before we left for our trip, NBC’s Today Show aired Matt Lauer live from Bhutan. Then the reaction of people was: “Oh…we saw Matt Lauer’s piece on Bhutan! It looks like a beautiful country!”

In spite of the Today Show’s “promo” extolling its unique beauty, we were still awed and inspired by the country, it’s mountains and valleys, and most of all, it’s people.
