Inge Kartveit climbs Kilimanjaro to show that life goes on

Inge Kartveit of Bergen, Norway, has planned a trip of great deal symbolic importance to him. Inge’s wife fought with cancer for years, and last January she lost the fight. Inge Kartveit is now planning on climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro with AWR one year after his wife tragically passed.

“Kili has been a target for me during my wife’s cancer illness, so one year after she lost the fight against cancer I would really like to be at the summit and make a sort of finalization of six very difficult years and telling myself that life does not end even if you have lost someone very close to yourself.”

We commend Inge for his brave trek of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and we wish him success on his summit attempt!

“Pack as if you had to carry all of your clothes. Invest in high quality clothing that is made for trekking. Buy a day pack which will limit what you can bring with you.”

Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano Erupts

Thousands of Maasai herdsmen living around the area of the Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano vacated their homes in the wake of a trail of the eruptions in early September 2007 that left two children injured and a school damaged.

Meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, Ol Doinyo Lengai is called the strangest volcano on earth by National Geographic, where lava fountains harden in midair then shatter like glass.

Ol Doinyo Lengai is a unique and extremely fascinating volcano that is located in the African Rift Valley northwest of Arusha, Tanzania. It is the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a highly fluid lava that usually contains almost no silicon. Natrocarbonatite lava is also much cooler than other lavas, being only about 950 degrees compared to temperatures over 2000 degrees for other lavas.
