Photos from a Tented Camp Safari

Great photos from a 10-day Tanzania Safari with Lake Natron!

“We saw lions chasing giraffes, gazelles, zebras, elephants, and wildebeests, but they all got away. At night, we heard lions and hyenas but haven’t seen the latter yet.  Then we watched the lions for about an hour play with their cubs.  It really is Lion King here including pumba and the rest of the cast! Seriously. Simba means  lion. Pumba is a warthog.  Also there is a nation of wildebeests, over 3 million, migrating with zebras and gazelles going along for their own reasons.  We also saw vicious baboons and then hippos and crocodiles bathing, Lions waiting for their prey, as gentle giraffes munching on trees half their size.  High end camping is the way to go! We have a very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide for the week on our private tour.”

Galapagos for Families

Our favorite boats when taking kids are

They are great for multi-generational trips too!

These boats have child discounts (typically 15-25% for kids 11 and under), special family departures, and special programs for the kids. They can accommodate 3 people to a room, and/or they have cheaper cabins for kids with connecting doors.

Children 11 and under pay half the national park fees, so only $50.

For children under 5, the only boat options are the Legend, Coral I/II, Millenium, and New Flamingo.

The Markha Valley Trek of India: In a Guide’s Words

Stok-Kangri

We asked one of our leading Ladakh guides what he especially adores about trekking in the Ladakh region of northern India, especially the Markha Valley trek, a trek we offer from Mid-May to the beginning of October. That’s a period when the premier treks in Nepal, like the Everest Base Camp trek, are not the best due to the monsoon. If you like to travel in the summer months and want a high-altitude trek of a lifetime in a remote, rugged region, the Stok Kangri trek is a true gem!

Nimaling

The first time I climbed Stok Kangri (20,187 feet) via the Markha Valley route was way back in 1993. Ladakh was still an unknown area for international travelers mind and only a government Indian airline was operating in the region.

It was love at first sight. I love treks where I get to meet local villagers along with beautiful mountain vistas. And Markha Valley has it all. Sculpted canyons and fantastic rock formations, medieval villages, Buddhist gompas, mighty Himalayan rivers, the high altitude pastures of Nimaling and snow-covered peaks are just some of the features of this unique and exciting trek,

Every time I go back, I am captivated by this surreal multicolored landscape of white capped ranges with bright green patches of barley fields below, of locals working in the fields with their donkeys and mules, pasture lands laced with hungry yaks and sheep.

For the outdoor lovers, this trek has everything to excite your senses, with the optional ascent of Stok Kangri providing an unforgettable highlight to an amazing trip.
