Conversation with Uganda and Rwanda Safari Expert Phil Ward

Recently we had the great honor of having Phil Ward, a long-time Uganda and Rwanda safari expert, come by our Boulder, Colorado office for a visit and a chat. He was gracious enough to allow me to ask him a few questions so I could put some of his thoughts up on our blog. I hope you enjoy this useful “insider’s information!”

– Dan Crandall, International Sales Manager for Adventures Within Reach

Dan Crandall (DC): What is your favorite park in Uganda and why?

Phil Ward (PW): Murchison Falls National Park. This park has it all; big game like elephants, hippos, and crocs; amazing bird life including the Shoebill, in fact we get bird watchers from all over the world coming to Murchison just to find that bird; unique activities like boat safaris on the Nile; and the Falls themselves, which are beautiful year-round.

DC: How hard is it to hike to see the gorillas?

PW: This is a tough call… it can either be very very easy or very very difficult. Reaching the gorillas can range from 30 minutes of hiking to 5-6 hours of hiking each way. Overall, if someone is looking for the easiest trek to the gorillas, choosing Rwanda for your trek is a good idea, though the difficulty or easiness level is unpredictable and never guaranteed.

DC: If I were to splurge on a fancy lodge somewhere, what would it be?

PW: In Rwanda, I’d say Sabyinyo Lodge, a property used in conjunction with gorilla treks in Volcanoes National Park. In Uganda, I’d have to say Apoka Lodge, a special boutique kind of lodge, in the remote Kidepo National Park. Kidepo is simple amazing. You can visit real stone age tribes who are still using stones for tools. There right there. And it has good wildlife. I saw the best scene of lions hunting buffalo I’ve ever seen in my life there, and I’ve been doing this for over 35 years remember. Just fabulous…

DC: If I want to do a truly unique experience, perhaps off the beaten path, what would it be?

PW: I’d have to say Kidepo again. It’s hard to get to: 2 days of driving each way or what most people would do is fly one way, and drive the other, especially as part of a larger tour where you visit Murchison Falls, trek chimps in Kibale, explore Queen Elizabeth Park, or trek the gorillas, etc. Kidepo is true wilderness… this is what Africa used to look like 30 years ago!

DC: What is the biggest mistake travelers make? (overpacking, not staying long enough, only doing gorillas for 1 day, not bringing enough money, etc.)

PW: Over-packing! People often bring just too much of everything. I used to do this fun exercise when I was guiding… after a trip, I’d ask people (the ones who brought big bags) if they had ever gotten to the bottom of their bag. Almost everyone said no! Most hadn’t even gotten to half-way through their bag.

DC: Are there a lot of bugs?

PW: No, not really. Most of the two countries are close to a mile high. The altitude helps the climate and the bugs. Malaria is present in some areas though.

DC: What is the most frequently asked question from travelers?

PW: “Are we there yet?” Ha! (Phil laughing) Just kidding. Before people go on a trip, a lot of people ask about the bugs. On the trips, people often ask how hard or easy it is to trek the gorillas.

DC: What is one thing people should pack that they often forget?

PW: Travelers need to bring enough cash and the right kind of cash (for example, clean bills in good condition that are from 2006 and newer) to Rwanda and Uganda. Especially Uganda, you need to bring cash and exchange it (to Uganda shillings in Uganda and Rwanda Francs in Rwanda) as soon as you can, for example, right after you arrive, while you are still in civilization. Many places you visit on safari are in the bush far away from banks. It’s hard for locals to convert US dollars or euros in the middle of nowhere and it’s also hard to use credit cards even at the lodges to settle bar bills. Sometimes lodges do take credit cards but charge a 10% processing fee. Local currency is a must to bring along on a safari there. And travelers checks are not a good idea to bring, they are getting harder and harder to cash and there’s often a fee.

DC: Any funny or amazing stories?

PW: Many years ago, I was leading a group who was trekking the gorillas. We found the gorillas and one guy just could not stop himself from standing up for a better vantage point. A female and her juvenile youngster took special interest in him, starting to stare at him. I wondered why. Anyway, the ranger discretely told the man to crouch back down, which he did, but he gradually stood back up,. This time the female and juvenile got even closer, just staring at his crotch, mesmerized. I couldn’t figure it out until I saw that his foil-wrapped sandwich (we bring picnic lunches with us on the treks) was dangling inadvertently between his legs, hanging from the back of his belt where he had tied the sandwich. (Phil laughing). I’ll never forget it!

Luxury Galapagos Boats: the Eclipse and Athala II

The Eclipse

The Eclipse is perhaps the finest mid-sized luxury vessels to cruise the Galapagos. Accommodating 48 passengers, the Eclipse offers unparalleled service, beautifully appointed rooms, and excellent itineraries that show visitors the best of what the Galapagos has to offer. The Eclipse is unique in offering the generous accommodation of a larger vessel, while preserving the atmosphere and exclusivity of a smaller yacht.

Deluxe Stateroom

The Eclipse is excellent for solo travelers, couples, groups of friends and families – special departures accommodate younger children, although children 8 and over are welcome on all departures. It also offers an extra activity not included on all Galapagos cruises: opportunities for kayaking!

We are excited to announce that the Eclipse will soon be joined by a sister boat: the Athala II, a 16-passenger catamaran. This vessel is currently being refitted and redecorated to provided the same quality of service and comfort that we expect from the Eclipse. Cruises on the Athala II will begin in mid-October.

Passengers who book now can take advantage of special rates for the relaunch of the Athala II! Contact us for details and pricing for 5 and 7-night cruises.

The Galapagos Cruise Experience – Choosing the Right Boat

Sunset aboard the Galapagos Legend

I recently enjoyed an amazing cruise in the Galapagos (June 2011). My first trip to “the enchanted islands” (“las islas encantadas” as they were known early on to Spanish sailors who thought the often misty islands floated in the sea) did not disappoint; I marveled at the beautiful scenery and the abundant wildlife. I hope I will be lucky enough to return there one day.

Overall I had a wonderful travel experience from the time I boarded a plane in Quito to the time I got back on a plane at Baltra airport in the Galapagos. The main reason was the excellent service and organization of the trip on the Galapagos Legend. Most travel and Galapagos experts will advise that a visitor go on a cruise – it is simply the best way to see what makes these islands so special. But which cruise you choose also makes a big difference.

Over the years we have learned which boats offer consistently excellent service and leave our clients happiest. We have a list of many boats but strive to recommend cruises that best fit a traveler’s budget and travel style as well as our own knowledge of which boats offer great experiences to visitors. Below I will share a few things to look for in a cruise based upon my own experience in the Galapagos.

1. Organization – A well organized tour can help improve your overall Galapagos experience. The better boats have planned their schedules to work with specific flights into and out of the Galapagos and they have representatives available when you check in to your flight (in Quito or Guayaquil) and waiting for you upon arrival. A well organized cruise, such as on the Galapagos Legend, also means that you can expect an early morning activity before your morning flight back to the mainland (think: deep water snorkeling with sharks!).

Sabina, a naturalist guide with the Legend, and a Blue Footed Boobie

2. Guides – The vessel you choose also reflects the quality of guides and the crew. While a good and safe crew is paramount, having a good guide will greatly improve your experience. Your naturalist guide will lead you and about 8 or 12 other companions on daily walks and snorkeling excursions during landings. The best boats and the best companies attract the best guides: friendly, responsible naturalists who put your safety first but also strive to provide you with as much information as possible about the natural history of the islands and the wildlife that you encounter. This part of your experience is certainly one of the best reasons to visit the Galapagos.

The Coral II, a 20 passenger boat

3. Price & Quality – The Galapagos are expensive no matter which boat you choose. We can recommend excellent luxury vessels such as the Eclipse and we can also arrange for “budget class” cruises for travelers on a tight budget. It is best however to at least choose a mid-range boat or even a first class boat such as one of the Coral boats (sister boats of the Legend). A mountain guide working in mainland Ecuador who has been to the Galapagos seven times explained to me the importance of picking a good boat: his first trip there on a budget boat was so rocky at night that he didn’t sleep for 5 days! He swore that he would never go back, but is glad that he changed his mind. So choosing a good boat is an important factor in what is certainly a “trip of a lifetime.”

4. Boat size – Boats in the Galapagos range from approximately 16 passenger to 100 passenger vessels. Would you like to be on a smaller, more intimate boat or a larger boat with more people and larger common areas? The larger boats still feel fairly small and are wonderful experiences, so the boat you finally pick will be one of several excellent choices. Boat size can also affect the overall comfort of the cruise since most boats navigate at night while you sleep – ask us for advice!

5. Your travel style and expectations – Another major criterion for choosing a boat is what you expect to get out of the experience. Are you traveling with children? Do you want more snorkeling opportunities? Opportunities to go kayaking? Do you want to dive? Along with the size of the boat you should consider amenities offered on boats including a pool/ jacuzzi, bar, or laundry service.

6. Cruise length – The duration of the cruise affects what you’ll see and how much the cruise will cost. Most boats have cruises that last either 4, 5 or 8 days. It can be worthwhile to spend an entire week in the Galapagos for some people since you’ll probably get to visit all of the major islands. While one traveler might prefer a shorter cruise with a few days based on Santa Cruz island for relaxation and snorkeling, another might be interested in a shorter cruise followed by time spent discovering the Ecuadorian highlands with the beautiful city of Quito and snow-capped volcanoes.

7. Specials – Many boats offer specials during the off-peak seasons. Specials can include free flights to the Galapagos, free park fees, a large discount such as 50% off a 2nd traveler’s fare, or free accommodations on the mainland. Travelers with flexible travel dates should ask us about dates with specials to help them save on their cruise or perhaps upgrade to a higher class of boat or cabin.

We are happy to help our travelers pick the best boat and cruise for their vacation to the Galapagos. It is a special place and a wonderful experience, and we hope that all of our travelers will come back from the Galapagos with great memories and smiles on their faces!

World’s 10 best places to climb

Lonely Planet and Today Travel posted their list of the world’s 10 best places to climb.  Adventures Within Reach offers a number of the destinations on their list including Kilimanjaro, glacier trekking in Argentina, and Iquitos, Peru.

However, I have to add a few more of our favorites!

14-Day Seven Ecuadorian Peaks With Cotopaxi and Chimborazo

14-Day Seven Ecuadorian Peaks With Cotopaxi and Chimborazo

14-Day Seven Ecuadorian Peaks With Cotopaxi and Chimborazo

A program directed specifically to mountain lovers. This trip is also relatively demanding physically. The treks and the ascents are linked to assure a perfect acclimatization to the altitude and to increase your physical resistance.

You will pass almost 14 days at high altitude and will climb 7 of the most famous Ecuadorian volcanoes: Fuya-Fuya, Culbiche, Imbabura, Pasochoa, Illinizas, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

You can visit the gorillas in as little as 3 days or see all of Rwanda in 9 days or add Uganda for a total of 13 days.  This is an experience you will never forget!

Everest Base Camp in Nepal

Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal

Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal

The trek begins with an “eye opening” flight to Lukla, situated at 9,184ft. The trek passes through the picturesque Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar culminating in the “ascent” of Kala Patthar – 18,187ft – from where classic views of Everest and its surrounding peaks are available. Most of the trek is spent above altitudes of 3000 meters. Although this is a short trek, by Nepal standards, there will be plenty of time to enjoy the culture of the Sherpas, visit ancient monasteries and learn how Lamaistic Buddhism influences Sherpa life. We shall stop at any of the numerous teahouses, sip a glass of sweetened tea or Chang (millet beer) and get a taste of hospitality unique to the Sherpas. Beautiful, multi-hued prayer flags, prayer wheels and intricately carved mani stones line every hilltop, rock wall, and trail-side, singing prayers to the gods with every breeze and every passing traveler.

The Mont Blanc: French Alps

8-Day Climb The Mont Blanc

This region is where mountain climbing was born! In 1786 Jacques Balmat and a group of adventurous climbers were the first people to reach the top of Western Europe’s highest peak at 4,810 m (15,782 ft) above sea level. Climbing the mountain usually takes at least two days with an overnight spent in a high altitude mountain hut. We offer an 8-day program that includes several other peaks to prepare climbers for the big mountain.

Bahia Bustamante was recently written up in the New York Times as “Argentina’s Secret (and Private) Answer to the Galapagos.” Travelers staying in the region can partake in a variety of activities including boat trips to islands, visits to beaches, horseback riding, and hiking.

The region is ideal for wildlife photographers and it boasts a fascinating, 60 million year old petrified forest. Those interested in local culture can also witness the sheep farming activities and the harvesting of seaweed.

Besides sea lions and dolphins the area is best know for its variety of birds including Magellenic penguins, gulls, terns, cormorants, and steamer ducks.

Adventures Within Reach offers 4 and 6-day itineraries to Bahia Bustamante from September through April.
