How to make the most of cultural tours

Bushman tribe at Lake Eyasi, Tanzania

Bushman tribe at Lake Eyasi, Tanzania

Cultural tours are truly special, particularly if both groups participate fully. It is also a great way to support the local economy.

Before arriving at your destination, learn how to say a few things in their native language especially “Hello,” “What is your name,” “Thank you,” and “Good-bye.”

Ask your guide about cultural sensitivities (what not to do) so that no one is offended. Follow the lead of your guide and ask how to best communicate. There may be a leader or elder, who should be greeted.

  • Sit or stand with the group.
  • Say “Hello” and ask their name.
  • Give them your name, shake their hand.
  • Have them show you their belongings or what they are doing.
  • If there are separate groups (men/women, young/old), try to visit with each group.
  • Have 1-2 people in your group take pictures so that the others can integrate without distractions.
  • Socialize first, and then take pictures.

The Haute Route: Chamonix to Zermatt in the Alps

Skier with the Matterhorn in the distance.

Adventures Within Reach is pleased to offer the Haute Route (or High Level Route) from Chamonix, France to Zermatt, Switzerland. This classic trek was first pioneered by members of the British Alpine Club along with local French and Swiss guides in the 1860s. National Geographic named it one of the top ten distance trails in the world.

Winter Haute Route Ski Tour: March through May

The winter trek is a 6-day, long-distance back country ski tour. Mountain huts open full service accommodation in mid-March and remain open to mid-May. Those who love ski touring can experience a high altitude, alpine adventure with the comfort and security of the hut system. Each day of the Haute Route ends with a warm meal and relaxing evening.

The snow covered landscape is simply breathtaking. A combination of climbs, descents and traverses on glaciers takes skiers through the greatest concentration of high peaks in France and Switzerland. As with all of AWR’s trips, safety is our top priority. Your group of 4 to 6 people will be led by two guides: a local mountain guide and a ski guide.

2011 dates: March 20 – 27, March 27  – April 3, April 3 – 10, April 24 – May 1, May 1 – 8

Summer Haute Route by Foot: July through September

The summer season allows hikers to take advantage of this spectacular landscape. It takes 9 days to complete the hike, known as the “Walker’s Haute Route.”

Ibex

Along the way hikers witness a different side to this alpine environment including wildflowers and animals. You may see Switzerland’s best known flower, the Edelweiss, and animals including chamois, ibex and marmots. The mountains also change in the summer – when the snow melts the ice falls of the many glaciers are exposed, revealing beautiful networks of crevasses.

2011 dates: August 11 – 21 & September 1 – 11

Hut System

The Valsorey Hut

The excellent system of mountain huts allows for trekkers and skiers to spend the night in comfortable accommodations along the route. Situated high above the tree line, local associations and sections of the Swiss Alpine Club originally built the huts to provide shelter and lodging for mountaineers.

Today climbers, hikers and mountaineers can use them to experience the beauty and tranquility of the Alps.

Chamonix and Zermatt

Trekkers can explore the towns of Chamonix and Zermatt before and after the Haute Route. Chamonix, in France, is the birthplace of modern mountaineering and a prized alpine retreat. It was the site of the first winter Olympics in 1924 and remains one of the most beautiful places in Europe. Zermatt might be Switzerland’s best-known town with its car-free streets and views of the Matterhorn. In both places you can enjoy local cuisine including fondue and raclatte.

Visit our website to learn more about the Summer and the Winter Haute Route as well as other treks near Chamonix on the Tour du Mont Blanc.

We also offer custom itineraries. Do you wish to do a shorter or longer variation of the hiking or the ski touring Haute Route? Are you interested in other possibilities in the regions around Chamonix and Zermatt? Please contact us for more information and pricing.

AWR’s Private Climb of Aconcagua in February

Aconcagua - 22,841 ft / 6,962 m

Aconcagua - 22,841 ft / 6,962 m

The highest mountain outside of Asia, Aconcagua, is a remarkable mountain lying in the Mendoza region of Argentina.  Aconcagua is one of the “seven summits,” the highest peak on each continent, and represents a stage on an exceptional quest to summit all seven summits.  A lofty goal on its own at 6,962 metres/22,841 ft, Aconcagua stands as the roof of South America!

Adventures Within Reach has an upcoming departure for Aconcagua set for February 14th, 2011. We still have space available for adventure seekers and alpine climbing enthusiasts!

AWR’s Private Aconcagua Climb

This 17 day excursion, departing from the city of Mendoza, will follow the Normal Route. Once participants arrive at the end of paved roads they will enter the Aconcagua Provincial Park and begin hiking at an altitude of over 10,000 feet. The arrival at the Plaza de Mulas base camp at 13,944 feet will be the site of several days of acclimatization in the ascent of this formidable and majestic peak.

Climbing to three more camps (Plaza Canadá, Nido de Cóndores, and Berlin) will bring the climbers and their guides to over 19,000 feet where they spend the night before their summit bid. The itinerary including two extra days, scheduled in the case of bad weather, will allow for the best chances of reaching the summit.

After returning from the mountain climbers will spend an evening together at a Mendoza hotel and celebrate their achievement.

History and Lore of the Roof of America

Aconcagua, the culminating point of the Cordillera de Los Andes, lies 180 kilometers west of Mendoza, Argentina near the boarder with Chile. The mountains above the arid and continental climate of Mendoza are crowned with glaciers and subject to the conditions of high altitude.

The origins of the name “Aconcagua” are uncertain, but three theories predominate. The oldest indigenous cultures in the area are the Aymaras and the Araucanos. “Kon-kawa” is Aymara for snowy peak and “Aconca-Hue” is Araucano for the name of a river that means that which comes from the otherside. The Inca influence in the area is also important and the Quecha “Akon-Kahuak” means sentinal of stone. Despite these possibilities an ancient relationship to the mountain remained speculative; however, in 1985, trekkers discover an Inca mummy at an altitude of over 15,000 feet. The remains of this young male believed to have been sacrificed suggest an ancient spiritual connection to the high mountains of the Andes.

A Serious Mountaineering Objective

Aconcagua is accessible yet a serious mountaineering objective due to inherent difficulties of the climb.  The greatest challenges are high altitude and potentially extreme weather. For success, climbers need good fitness, proper acclimatization, and proper logistics. The chances for success of our expedition are high with excellent planning and the experience of internationally certified high altitude guides.  The Normal Route success rate is 75%.

The Normal Route (or Northwest Route) is physically demanding yet attainable for motivated individuals. The Swiss Mathias Zurbriggen first climbed the mountain by the Normal Route in 1897 on an expedition organized by the Englishman Edward Fitz Gerald. The mountain has routes of all difficulties from extreme rock and ice to the accessible, non-technical terrain of the Normal Route.

Participants on this climb will be rewarded by spectacular views of the mountain and the many peaks that surround it. They will also have the joy of climbing on the highest mountain in the Americas, experiencing an exceptional adventure, and building unforgettable memories.

Upcoming Trip to Nepal: “Free A Child” with GO Campaign and Annapurna Trek

Girl in Rural Nepal

In 1998 our charity partner, Charities Within Reach, began the “Free A Child” initiative to help prevent sex trafficking of Nepali girls to India. Working in remote poor villages in Nepal, Free A Child has changed the lives of hundreds of girls and women living in areas where sex-trafficking is rampant. Along with our partner in Nepal, Charities Within Reach has involved these at-risk individuals in skills training and income-generating projects, keeping them out of the hands of traffickers and giving them the freedom to determine their own lives.

A new partnership with GO Campaign is raising money for Free a Child’s continuing efforts to provide educational opportunities to these young Nepali woman. Through the support provided by these efforts many of these woman are able to establish their own small businesses that contribute to their communities.

September 2010 Trip

This September, a group will head to Nepal to visit the training center in the town of Makwanpur Hetauda. On site, the visit will allow the group to discover the various skills acquired by the project’s participants.  These crafts include sewing, bamboo crafting, and farming. It is our hope that the participants will share our passion for increasing awareness of a rampant problem and the solutions available to help girls and women take control of their lives.

After their visit to the training center, participants on this 19-day trip will depart for a 6-day Annapurna Teahouse Trek (see a sample itinerary). The trip also includes several days to visit Kathmandu. A few spots remain on this trip departing on September 27th. Anyone interested in participating should contact us for detailed information.

Project Support

In our continued effort to support the laudable efforts of GO Campaign, Adventures Within Reach is donating an extra $50 for every person who signs up for this upcoming trip. We are also working to raise approximately $23,000 for the project. You can help us by making a contribution at our personal fund raising page.

While $4,800 provides annual stipends for 60 SHG Education & Group Coordinators, contributions of $70 provide a loan to establish a small business and $13 can save a small business! Please consider contributing to this cause!

Amazing History of the Kilimanjaro Marathon

Kilimanjaro Marathon

Kilimanjaro Marathon

CORRECTION:

Our original post read: “While you may have read about the Kilimanjaro Marathon in our last year’s blog entry, most people are unaware of the unique history of the race and its founder…”

Marie Frances’s Mt. Kilimanjaro Marathon was incorrectly associated with the Kilimanjaro Marathon. The Mt. Kilimanjaro Marathon, run for the past 21 years in June, is an annual run often completed in association with Kilimanjaro climbs.

The Kilimanjaro Marathon is run in February and is an IAAF race that attracts over 3,800 runners.

We would like to thank John & Debbie Addison for pointing out our mistake and also inform readers of our blog that our 17-day Kilimanjaro Marathon and our 20-day Music, Mountain, Migration and Marathon trips are both centered around February’s Kilimanjaro Marathon.

Dress up like a Gorilla and Run!

For the second year running, Adventures Within Reach is registering for the annual Denver Gorilla Run on October 30, 2010 to raise money for the Mountain Gorilla Conservation FundAWR will pay half the entrance fee for anyone who joins our 2010 gorilla team!

AWR Crew at the Denver Gorilla Run 2009

AWR Crew at the Denver Gorilla Run 2009

Last year, our team helped beat the Guinness Book of World Records™ “number of people dressed up in gorilla costumes.”  There were a total of 1061 “gorillas,” which is more than the number of gorillas still remaining in the wild.

We completed the 5.6k race last year through downtown Denver running, walking, and riding bikes donned in safari hats and vests over our gorilla costumes.

As much fun as the Gorilla run is, it’s not all just monkeying around- it is also to raise funds and awareness for the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund. The fund, established in 1985, protects the 700 individuals left in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  As we lead safaris every year into Uganda and Rwanda to observe these majestic creatures in their native habitat, we are always searching for ways of keeping this highly endangered species alive.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, conservation efforts have led to an increase in the Virunga population by 14% in the last 12 years, while the Bwindi population has increased by 12% over the past decade. So, we invite you to participate in the run with us by donating on-line or signing up to run with us (enter “AWR” as the Team Name).  AWR will pay half the entrance fee for anyone who joins our 2010 gorilla team!
